New Guide Targets Heat Illness at Mass Gatherings
WHO recommends several measures to protect visitors and workers.
The World Health Organization released guidance for reducing heat-related illness at major sports, religious and cultural gatherings. Its evidence review covered studies from 1980 to 2025 and recorded more than 22,000 heat-related illnesses.
WHO recommends combining safe water, cooling areas, schedule adjustments, crowd management, public communication and prepared medical services. The review found that well-organized on-site systems can treat more than 90 percent of patients at event venues, reducing pressure on hospitals and ambulances.
