Satellite Observations Track Intense Pacific Cyclone Activity
Multiple storms produced damaging conditions during an unusually active season.
NASA satellite imagery captured a cluster of tropical cyclones across the northeastern and central Pacific. Hurricane Polo crossed Baja California and made another landfall near Guaymas after weakening, while its moisture contributed to further flood risks across northern Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States.
Hurricane Nolo passed near Hawaii but delivered more than 30 centimetres of rain to parts of Maui and the Island of Hawaii, causing flooding, fallen trees and landslides. NASA noted that accumulated cyclone energy in the northeastern Pacific was more than twice the norm by September 28; warm equatorial water and low wind shear associated with El Niño can support storm development.
