US Senate backs mining near Boundary Waters

A close Senate vote could allow mining near a protected area.

The US Senate has voted to end a mining ban near Minnesota\'s Boundary Waters, a famous area of lakes, rivers and forests. The vote was very close, passing 50 to 49.

The ban had stopped mining in part of the Superior National Forest for 20 years. Supporters of the new measure say mining could bring jobs and help the United States get important metals.

Environmental groups strongly oppose the plan. They say mining could pollute the water and damage one of the country\'s most loved wild places.

The House has already approved the measure, and President Donald Trump is expected to sign it. Even so, the proposed mine still faces legal fights and will need more permits before work can begin.
