Mediterranean States Adopt Regional Water Resilience Frameworks
The Rome meeting connected policy goals with financing, digitalization and integrated resource management.
Representatives of the 42 Union for the Mediterranean members endorsed a regional course for water cooperation through 2030 at a ministerial meeting in Rome. Their declaration addresses sustainable management, climate adaptation, infrastructure and progress toward water-related Sustainable Development Goals.
The newly launched Rome Initiative on Water is intended to convert national priorities into investable project pipelines, particularly for Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries that face financing and capacity constraints. Ministers also endorsed frameworks for coordinating water, energy, food and ecosystems; improving water finance; and digitalizing the sector, including a regional capacity-building project on water and artificial intelligence.
