The European Commission proposed an EU Critical Communication System for police, firefighters, medical services and civil protection teams. Existing national systems may not connect when responders cross a border, and terrestrial networks can fail during disasters.
The proposed system would use secure and resilient communication channels across EU countries. The Commission says it could support responses to fires, floods, storms, attacks and threats to important infrastructure. It is a proposal rather than an operating network.
