Rising Spanish Enrolments in China Bring Teacher Demand Into Focus

Read the story

Enrolments across Spanish-language degree studies, elective subjects and foreign-language courses in China rose 12.6% between 2023 and 2025, UNAM China reported on October 27, citing the Instituto Cervantes 2026 yearbook. The count describes those study categories rather than every Spanish speaker in the country.

The yearbook was presented during a Beijing symposium marking the institute's 20th anniversary there. Its director, Luis García Montero, said interest in learning Spanish has grown since the pandemic and that more teachers are needed to meet it.
