Soft Robotic Enteroscope Navigates Pig Intestine in Preclinical Study

Name: __________________________ Date: __________________

Read the story

A research team has developed a flexible robotic enteroscope to help navigate the small intestine, whose length and folds make it difficult to examine. MIT and UT Southwestern researchers drew on snake movement and textured surfaces to help the device grip and advance.

In preclinical pig studies it travelled approximately two metres and demonstrated imaging, tissue sampling and local fluid delivery. The researchers say further engineering and safety validation are needed before human testing; the results do not establish clinical benefit.

Read and practise

  1. What features of snakes helped inspire the prototype?

    1. Movement and textured surfaces for grip
    2. Venom and heat sensing
    3. Camouflage and hearing
  2. Which conclusion is supported by the preclinical results?

    1. The device demonstrated tools in pigs but requires validation before human testing
    2. The device has already improved treatment outcomes in people
    3. The robot has replaced current procedures in hospitals

Your turn
