Ocean Brightening Could Help Track Microplastics From Space

In this lesson: Assess agreement between datasets and distinguish a model match from proof.

Read the story

Researchers at the University of Bergen analysed three satellite datasets covering 2002 to 2022. Their November 5 study found blue and green brightening in parts of the ocean near the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Computer simulations produced this combined colour shift more often when microplastics were included than when only natural factors changed. The findings suggest a possible way to monitor small plastic particles remotely.

However, the satellite datasets differed in the size and extent of the changes. Matching a model does not establish the cause. Direct measurements of particles and light in the water are needed to test the proposed link.

Read and practise

  1. What limitation appeared when the satellite datasets were compared?

    1. They showed identical changes in every area.
    2. They differed in the magnitude and area of the changes.
    3. None recorded any colour change.
  2. Which conclusion is supported by the final paragraph?

    1. A matching model identifies the cause without further evidence.
    2. The proposed link has already been tested by direct water measurements.
    3. A model match still needs testing against direct water measurements.

Your turn

Why should researchers obtain direct water measurements even though their models support the plastic explanation?
