Read the story
Nintendo’s November 5 results put cumulative Switch 2 sales at 26.35 million units through September 30. Of that total, 6.49 million were sold in the April–September period; the figures describe different time spans and should not be added together.
Across Nintendo’s business, revenue declined 12.1% from the same six months a year earlier, while operating profit increased 49.1%. Nintendo attributed the improvement to software accounting for a greater share of sales and a refund of previously recorded US tariff costs.
The company left its full-year financial forecast unchanged.

Read and practise
Why would adding 6.49 million to 26.35 million overstate the total?
- The six-month sales are already included in the cumulative total
- The two figures refer to different console models
- Both figures measure only game sales
What comparison produced the 12.1% revenue decline?
- April–September versus the previous full year
- April–September versus the immediately preceding six months
- April–September versus the same six months one year earlier
Your turn
Summarise the profit change without implying that revenue rose, and include both reasons Nintendo gave.
