Read the story

Indonesia’s forestry ministry has announced the sighting of a Javan rhinoceros calf with its mother, Desy, in Ujung Kulon National Park. A camera trap recorded the pair on October 10; the ministry released the news on November 2.

Park officials estimated the calf was one to two months old at the time of the recording and identified it as Desy’s fifth offspring. The precise date of its birth was not given.

The Javan rhino is critically endangered, with its remaining wild population in Indonesia. Park staff say they intend to continue monitoring the mother and calf while limiting disturbance.
