Orbiting Suncatcher Prototype Returns AI-Generated Poem

Google’s Project Suncatcher has returned an AI-generated poem from a prototype satellite launched on October 1. Engineers sent a prompt from the ground to an onboard Gemma 4 model and received its answer during a satellite pass, the company said on October 30.
The demonstration used Google’s tensor processing hardware and followed initial commissioning tests. TechCrunch reports that the craft carries four such chips, although power limits mean that only one can operate at a time.
The company plans further experiments on heat and radiation before a proposed test of two interconnected satellites in 2027. This is an early hardware experiment, not an announced commercial space-computing service.

Read and practise
What happened during a satellite pass?
- The ground team received a response from the onboard model.
- Engineers physically collected a computer chip.
- Two satellites were linked for the 2027 test.
Why can only one of the four chips operate at a time?
- Power limits
- The other three were sent back to Earth
- The satellite is waiting for a commercial licence
How should the proposed 2027 test be described?
- A future experiment, not an existing commercial service
- A commercial service that is already operating
- A completed experiment from the previous year
Your turn
Contrast the completed demonstration with the proposed 2027 experiment and explain the project’s current stage.
