Astronomers Propose Off-Axis Jet for Puzzling Gamma-Ray Burst

Name: __________________________ Date: __________________

Read the story

GRB 260310A, detected by NASA’s Fermi telescope on March 10, produced an unremarkable initial gamma-ray flash followed by an exceptionally bright afterglow. The international team observed it in visible light, X-rays and radio waves.

Researchers propose that the jet was directed away from Earth’s line of sight. As it slowed, radiation became visible from a wider range of angles. A narrow energetic centre surrounded by a slower outer flow is one possible explanation for a later X-ray brightening.

Read and practise

  1. Which kinds of light did the team use to observe the burst?

    1. Visible light, X-rays and radio waves
    2. Visible light and radio waves only
    3. X-rays and radio waves only
  2. What is one proposed explanation for the later X-ray brightening?

    1. A narrow energetic centre inside a slower outer flow
    2. A jet with no faster central region
    3. A second unrelated X-ray source

Your turn

Explain the viewing-angle interpretation and identify one proposed feature of the jet.
