Origami Structure Gives Magnetic Robot Several Ways to Move

In this lesson: Explain the role of configuration and evaluate the demonstration’s scope.

Read the story

A Wuhan University team has demonstrated an origami-inspired robot with two stable configurations. The research, published on November 6, combines a folded mechanical structure with an external magnetic control system.

Small magnetic disturbances produce different movements in each configuration. Stronger pulses trigger a switch between them, enabling rapid actions such as grasping. The researchers demonstrated crawling, turning, jumping and rolling as well as object capture.

Many magnetic mini-robots require highly uniform, precise fields. Here, the folded geometry helps manage motion under less uniform fields. The experiments demonstrate a design approach; they do not establish a finished commercial product.

Read and practise

  1. A controller applies a small magnetic disturbance. Which response fits the mechanism described?

    1. The robot moves while remaining in its current configuration.
    2. The robot switches configurations through the stronger-pulse mechanism.
    3. The robot cannot move unless its configuration changes first.
  2. What has the research established so far?

    1. A finished product ready for commercial sale
    2. A robot that depends on highly uniform fields
    3. An experimentally demonstrated design approach

Your turn
