Born in Melbourne, Jones entered Formula 1 in 1975 and claimed his first Grand Prix victory in Austria two years later. He won five races in the 1980 season on his way to becoming Australia’s second F1 world champion, after Jack Brabham.
Jones finished his Formula 1 career with 12 race victories and later worked as a broadcaster in Australia. Williams said he had played an important role in the team’s history and offered condolences to his family and friends.
