Scientists Reconstruct Van Gogh’s Painted Sky
Name: __________________________ Date: __________________
Read the story
A new study links The Starry Night to the predawn sky over Saint-Rémy around July 22, 1889. Researchers compared the moon, Venus and the Hyades star cluster.
The painting is usually dated to June. The proposed July match does not establish its completion date with certainty.
The date of a represented observation and the completion date of an artwork need not coincide. An astronomical match supports a possible source scene, but the artist could have worked on the painting afterwards or combined observations.
Editorial correction, 26 October 2026: We reviewed source attribution, wording and reading practice, correcting unsupported claims where needed. This is a retrospective archive review; the original publication date is retained.

Read and practise
What can a sky match most directly suggest?
- The exact final brushstroke date
- The date the canvas was manufactured
- A possible observation behind the scene
Why can completion remain uncertain?
- The artist could work later or combine observations
- Stars never change their positions in the sky
- A painting must be finished at the moment of observation
Your turn
Explain how a plausible sky date can differ from a painting’s completion date.
