Researchers Control One Particle of Antimatter

Name: __________________________ Date: __________________

Read the story

A Northwestern team trapped and cooled a single positron, keeping it isolated for months. The research appeared in Physical Review Letters on October 21.

The setup uses electric and magnetic fields. It could allow more precise comparisons between matter and antimatter, but those future results are not yet established.

Read and practise

  1. How did the setup isolate the positron?

    1. Contact with the container wall
    2. An ordinary open box
    3. Electric and magnetic fields
  2. Which part remains a future research goal?

    1. A more precise matter–antimatter comparison
    2. Keeping a particle isolated
    3. Cooling the positron

Your turn

Separate the achieved result from the next research goal.
