MIT Tests Ultrasound Device for Delivering Substances in the Brain

Read the story
MIT researchers designed an experimental brain implant combining a delivery tube and ultrasound. They hope it could one day improve medicine delivery after surgery for glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor.
Ultrasound helped substances spread farther in gel and mouse tests. The mouse experiment used an imaging contrast agent, not a cancer treatment. The device has not been shown to treat patients.

Read and practise
What did the researchers hope the device could eventually improve?
- Medicine delivery after brain tumor surgery
- The diagnosis of every brain tumor
- The speed of tumor surgery
What did the mouse experiment demonstrate?
- An imaging agent spread farther with ultrasound
- A cancer treatment prevented tumors returning
- The implant successfully treated patients
Your turn
Explain the difference between the result in mice and the researchers' future hope.
