Astronomers Investigate an Unusually Bright Afterglow
Name: __________________________ Date: __________________
Read the story
NASA’s Fermi telescope detected a gamma-ray burst called GRB 260310A on March 10. The initial flash appeared modest, but its visible-light afterglow became extremely bright.
An international research team suggests that Earth was outside the main direction of the burst’s jet. As the jet slowed, light could be seen from a wider range of angles. The explanation is a scientific interpretation of the observations.

Read and practise
What did NASA’s Fermi telescope detect on March 10?
- A gamma-ray burst
- A bright afterglow without an initial burst
- Radio waves without a gamma-ray flash
What do researchers suggest about the jet?
- Its main direction was away from Earth
- It pointed directly toward Earth
- Its main direction changed toward Earth after the flash
Your turn
Describe the difference between the initial flash and the afterglow, and state the proposed viewing angle.
