Senegal welcomed young athletes as the Youth Olympic Games officially opened on October 31. The event is the first Olympic sporting competition to be hosted in Africa, although it is separate from the main Summer Olympics.

The ceremony was held in Diamniadio, close to the capital Dakar. About 2,650 athletes are expected to compete, with events scheduled to run until November 13.

Dakar had originally been chosen to host the Games in 2022. The event was delayed by four years during the COVID-19 pandemic.
