Scientists Test Physics Under the Sea

In this lesson: Identify the instrument and state the result without overstating it.

Read the story

Scientists used an underwater detector called ORCA to study tiny particles called neutrinos. The detector is in the Mediterranean Sea.

They looked for changes that could challenge a basic rule of physics. They found no sign of those changes.

The result helps limit how large some possible effects could be. It does not prove that such effects can never happen. The research received new journal coverage on November 4.

Read and practise

  1. What did the scientists use to study neutrinos?

    1. A detector under the sea
    2. A camera above the clouds
    3. A telescope on the Moon
  2. What did the scientists find when they looked for the changes?

    1. Clear signs of all the changes
    2. No sign of those changes
    3. Proof that no particle can ever change

Your turn

Explain one thing the result helps scientists do and one thing it does not prove.
