Gas on Mars May Come From a Volcano

In this lesson: Find the gas location and recognise a possible underground source.

Name: __________________________ Date: __________________

Read the story

A spacecraft has found a gas above an area of Mars. The area is near a large volcano called Alba Mons.

Scientists say the gas may come from hot rock below the ground. They studied the gas and pictures of cracks in the surface.

The finding does not prove that a volcano is erupting today. Scientists have not seen new lava flows or eruptions on Mars.

Read and practise

  1. Where did the spacecraft find the gas?

    1. On a moon of Jupiter
    2. Near Alba Mons on Mars
    3. Beside a volcano on Earth
  2. What do scientists say may be the source of the gas?

    1. A volcano already seen erupting
    2. A new river on the surface
    3. Hot rock below the ground

Your turn

Name where the gas was found and explain whether scientists have seen a volcano erupting there.
