Pride and Prejudice Returns to Screen in New Netflix Trailer

How to use these two pages

Give learners the student worksheet. It contains the story and questions, without the answers. Keep this guide for yourself. Use it to lead the activity and explain the answers afterwards.

Student worksheet

A simple 15–20-minute lesson

  1. Before reading · 2 minutes

Show the title. Ask: “What do you think this story is about?”

  2. Read and answer · 8–10 minutes

Give out the student worksheet. Learners read for the main idea, then reread to answer the 2 questions. They can compare answers with a partner.

  3. Discuss and write · 5–8 minutes

Check the answers below together. Ask learners to point to the clue in the story, then finish with the open question.

Adjust the support: Let learners use word help or Level 1 if needed. For a challenge, compare the wording in another level. This activity is not a proficiency test.

Answers to the 2 questions

The question numbers match the student worksheet. Each answer includes a reason and the clue learners can find in the story.

  1. What roles did Dolly Alderton and Euros Lyn have?

Correct answer: A — Alderton wrote it and Lyn directed it

Why: Alderton wrote the adaptation, and Lyn directed it.

Clue in the story: A newly released Netflix trailer offers a preview of a six-part Pride and Prejudice series, with Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy. The adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel was written by Dolly Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn.

  2. How does the trailer’s availability compare with the premiere?

Correct answer: A — The trailer is available; the premiere is still ahead

Why: The trailer is already available, while the December 3 premiere remains in the future.

Clue in the story: Netflix says the series will premiere on December 3. The trailer is already available; the premiere remains a future event. Olivia Colman and Rufus Sewell play Elizabeth’s parents.

The open question: accept different answers

Ask learners: Identify the actors playing Elizabeth and Darcy, and explain what is still in the future.

One possible answer: Emma Corrin plays Elizabeth and Jack Lowden plays Darcy. The series premiere is scheduled for December 3 and has not happened yet.

This is an example, not the only correct answer. Look for a relevant idea, a reason and the learner’s own words. Learners can answer aloud or write one or two sentences.
