Fourth-Tier Fleetwood Eliminate Arsenal in Cup Shootout

How to use these two pages

Give learners the student worksheet. It contains the story and questions, without the answers. Keep this guide for yourself. Use it to lead the activity and explain the answers afterwards.

Student worksheet

A simple 15–20-minute lesson

  1. Before reading · 2 minutes

Show the title. Ask: “What do you think this story is about?”

  2. Read and answer · 8–10 minutes

Give out the student worksheet. Learners read for the main idea, then reread to answer the 2 questions. They can compare answers with a partner.

  3. Discuss and write · 5–8 minutes

Check the answers below together. Ask learners to point to the clue in the story, then finish with the open question.

Adjust the support: Let learners use word help or Level 1 if needed. For a challenge, compare the wording in another level. This activity is not a proficiency test.

Answers to the 2 questions

The question numbers match the student worksheet. Each answer includes a reason and the clue learners can find in the story.

  1. What did Jay Lynch do during the shootout?

Correct answer: B — He saved Bruno Guimarães’ penalty

Why: Lynch saved the Arsenal player’s spot kick; Haughey converted the decisive penalty.

Clue in the story: Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave the home team the lead and Viktor Gyökeres later levelled for Arsenal. Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães’ spot kick in the shootout before Conor Haughey converted Fleetwood’s decisive penalty. Arsenal’s Max Dowman had been sent off before the shootout.

  2. What does the 5–3 score describe?

Correct answer: B — The result of the penalty shootout

Why: The article says the match was 1–1 before Fleetwood won the shootout 5–3.

Clue in the story: Fleetwood Town, who play in the fourth tier of English football, knocked Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup on October 27. After a 1–1 draw, Fleetwood prevailed 5–3 in a penalty shootout to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.

The open question: accept different answers

Ask learners: Explain how Fleetwood advanced despite drawing in normal time, and name one action in the shootout.

One possible answer: Fleetwood and Arsenal drew 1–1 in normal time, but Fleetwood advanced by winning the shootout 5–3. Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães’ penalty before Conor Haughey scored the decisive kick.

This is an example, not the only correct answer. Look for a relevant idea, a reason and the learner’s own words. Learners can answer aloud or write one or two sentences.
