Fenerbahçe End Liverpool’s Perfect Champions League Start
How to use these two pages
Give learners the student worksheet. It contains the story and questions, without the answers. Keep this guide for yourself. Use it to lead the activity and explain the answers afterwards.
Student worksheetA simple 15–20-minute lesson
- Before reading · 2 minutes
Show the title. Ask: “What do you think this story is about?”
- Read and answer · 8–10 minutes
Give out the student worksheet. Learners read for the main idea, then reread to answer the 2 questions. They can compare answers with a partner.
- Discuss and write · 5–8 minutes
Check the answers below together. Ask learners to point to the clue in the story, then finish with the open question.
Adjust the support: Let learners use word help or Level 1 if needed. For a challenge, compare the wording in another level. This activity is not a proficiency test.
Answers to the 2 questions
The question numbers match the student worksheet. Each answer includes a reason and the clue learners can find in the story.
Which sequence correctly describes the second half?
Correct answer: B — Isak restored Liverpool’s lead, then Brown levelled four minutes later.
Why: The second paragraph explicitly puts Isak’s goal before Brown’s response four minutes later.
Clue in the story: Trey Nyoni’s opener was cancelled out by Mason Greenwood before half-time. Alexander Isak restored Liverpool’s advantage in the second half, but Archie Brown levelled again four minutes later.
How did the result affect the clubs’ records in this season’s competition?
Correct answer: C — It gave Fenerbahçe its first win and ended Liverpool’s perfect start.
Why: The opening paragraph states the different significance for the two sides.
Clue in the story: Fenerbahçe overturned two separate Liverpool leads to claim a 3–2 Champions League victory in Istanbul on November 4. The result gave the Turkish side its first win in this season’s competition and ended Liverpool’s perfect start.
The open question: accept different answers
Ask learners: Explain how the story presents both a match comeback and a change in the clubs’ season records.
One possible answer: Fenerbahçe recovered from two separate leads before Muriqi scored the decisive goal. That brought its first win of the competition and ended Liverpool’s perfect start.
This is an example, not the only correct answer. Look for a relevant idea, a reason and the learner’s own words. Learners can answer aloud or write one or two sentences.
Grammar to discuss
A non-defining relative clause
Vedat Muriqi, who came on as a substitute,
The who-clause adds information about the named scorer. The commas mark it as extra detail rather than information needed to identify which Muriqi is meant.
