Teacher guide & answers

In this lesson: Explain an all-round contribution and distinguish two kinds of achievement.

Barry’s All-Round Contribution Marks Moyes’s Everton Milestone

How to use these two pages

Give learners the student worksheet. It contains the story and questions, without the answers. Keep this guide for yourself. Use it to lead the activity and explain the answers afterwards.

Student worksheet

A simple 15–20-minute lesson

  1. Before reading · 2 minutes

Show the title. Ask: “What do you think this story is about?”

  2. Read and answer · 8–10 minutes

Give out the student worksheet. Learners read for the main idea, then reread to answer the 2 questions. They can compare answers with a partner.

  3. Discuss and write · 5–8 minutes

Check the answers below together. Ask learners to point to the clue in the story, then finish with the open question.

Adjust the support: Let learners use word help or Level 1 if needed. For a challenge, compare the wording in another level. This activity is not a proficiency test.

Answers to the 2 questions

The question numbers match the student worksheet. Each answer includes a reason and the clue learners can find in the story.

  1. Why does the reading say Barry’s contribution extended beyond finishing?

Correct answer: B — He also created a goal for a teammate.

Why: Barry set up Dewsbury-Hall, so his contribution included creating a scoring chance as well as finishing chances.

Clue in the story: Barry’s contribution extended beyond finishing. His pass set up Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for Everton’s third goal, completing a performance that helped transform the match.

  2. Which two achievements are distinguished in the final paragraph?

    Correct answer: A — Moyes’s matches-managed milestone and Everton’s recovery to win

Why: The paragraph connects an individual managerial milestone with the team’s recovery, and says the record is about matches managed.

Clue in the story: David Moyes was managing Everton for the 592nd time, matching Harry Catterick’s club record. The occasion combined an individual managerial milestone with a team recovery; the record concerned matches managed, not victories.

The open question: accept different answers

Ask learners: Explain how this match was significant for both Barry and Moyes without confusing their roles.

One possible answer: Barry helped turn a deficit into a win by scoring twice and assisting another goal. Moyes reached 592 matches as Everton manager, equalling Catterick’s record for matches managed rather than victories.

This is an example, not the only correct answer. Look for a relevant idea, a reason and the learner’s own words. Learners can answer aloud or write one or two sentences.

Grammar to discuss

Extended beyond widens the description

Barry’s contribution extended beyond finishing.

Extended beyond says scoring was only part of Barry’s contribution. The next sentence identifies the additional part: his pass for a teammate’s goal.
