BioWare Announces Closure After Three Decades

How to use these two pages

Give learners the student worksheet. It contains the story and questions, without the answers. Keep this guide for yourself. Use it to lead the activity and explain the answers afterwards.

Student worksheet

A simple 15–20-minute lesson

  1. Before reading · 2 minutes

Show the title. Ask: “What do you think this story is about?”

  2. Read and answer · 8–10 minutes

Give out the student worksheet. Learners read for the main idea, then reread to answer the 3 questions. They can compare answers with a partner.

  3. Discuss and write · 5–8 minutes

Check the answers below together. Ask learners to point to the clue in the story, then finish with the open question.

Adjust the support: Let learners use word help or Level 1 if needed. For a challenge, compare the wording in another level. This activity is not a proficiency test.

Answers to the 3 questions

The question numbers match the student worksheet. Each answer includes a reason and the clue learners can find in the story.

  1. What is the announced consequence for the next Mass Effect project?

Correct answer: A — Early development will stop

Why: The announcements describe ending work on the next project, not completing it or continuing at Edmonton.

Clue in the story: BioWare announced on October 21 that it is closing and ending early development of its next Mass Effect project. Its games include Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

  2. What priority does BioWare identify after the closure announcement?

Correct answer: C — Supporting its employees

Why: Support for the team is stated. The other actions are not announced.

Clue in the story: Parent company EA confirmed the Edmonton closure in an employee announcement. EA says it is concentrating its resources on fewer large projects and helping affected staff explore other roles within the company.

  3. Which claim would go beyond what the story reports?

Correct answer: B — Previously released games are being withdrawn

Why: A studio closure and the end of a development project do not establish that released games are being withdrawn.

Clue in the story: Parent company EA confirmed the Edmonton closure in an employee announcement. EA says it is concentrating its resources on fewer large projects and helping affected staff explore other roles within the company.

The open question: accept different answers

Ask learners: Write a headline that reports the closure without claiming that players will lose access to old games.

One possible answer: BioWare announces closure and ends work on the next Mass Effect project.

This is an example, not the only correct answer. Look for a relevant idea, a reason and the learner’s own words. Learners can answer aloud or write one or two sentences.
