Teacher guide & answers

A Dinosaur Skeleton Sells for $47.3 Million

How to use these two pages

Give learners the student worksheet. It contains the story and questions, without the answers. Keep this guide for yourself. Use it to lead the activity and explain the answers afterwards.

Student worksheet

A simple 15–20-minute lesson

  1. Before reading · 2 minutes

Show the title. Ask: “What do you think this story is about?”

  2. Read and answer · 8–10 minutes

Give out the student worksheet. Learners read for the main idea, then reread to answer the 2 questions. They can compare answers with a partner.

  3. Discuss and write · 5–8 minutes

Check the answers below together. Ask learners to point to the clue in the story, then finish with the open question.

Adjust the support: Let learners use word help or Level 1 if needed. For a challenge, compare the wording in another level. This activity is not a proficiency test.

Answers to the 2 questions

The question numbers match the student worksheet. Each answer includes a reason and the clue learners can find in the story.

  1. What is known about the buyer of Jodi?

Correct answer: A — The buyer’s name was not made public

Why: The report says the buyer’s name was not made public.

Clue in the story: A dinosaur skeleton called Jodi has sold for $47.3 million in New York. Sotheby’s held the sale on October 27. The buyer’s name was not made public.

  2. Why do some scientists worry about private fossil sales?

Correct answer: A — Important fossils may become hard to study or see

Why: The passage describes concern about people’s access to important fossils.

Clue in the story: The bones were found in Montana in 2019. Some scientists worry that people may not be able to study or see important fossils when they are sold to private buyers.

The open question: accept different answers

Ask learners: What happened to Jodi, and why are some scientists concerned?

One possible answer: Jodi sold for $47.3 million in New York. Some scientists worry that important fossils sold privately may not be available for people to study or see.

This is an example, not the only correct answer. Look for a relevant idea, a reason and the learner’s own words. Learners can answer aloud or write one or two sentences.
