Google’s Space Computer Writes a Poem

How to use these two pages

Give learners the student worksheet. It contains the story and questions, without the answers. Keep this guide for yourself. Use it to lead the activity and explain the answers afterwards.

Student worksheet

A simple 15–20-minute lesson

  1. Before reading · 2 minutes

Show the title. Ask: “What do you think this story is about?”

  2. Read and answer · 8–10 minutes

Give out the student worksheet. Learners read for the main idea, then reread to answer the 3 questions. They can compare answers with a partner.

  3. Discuss and write · 5–8 minutes

Check the answers below together. Ask learners to point to the clue in the story, then finish with the open question.

Adjust the support: Let learners use word help or Level 1 if needed. For a challenge, compare the wording in another level. This activity is not a proficiency test.

Answers to the 3 questions

The question numbers match the student worksheet. Each answer includes a reason and the clue learners can find in the story.

  1. What did the computer on the test satellite make?

    Correct answer: A — A short poem

Why: The first paragraph says the computer wrote a short poem in space.

Clue in the story: Google says a computer on its test satellite has written a short poem in space. The satellite is part of a project called Suncatcher. It was launched on October 1.

  2. Who sent a request to the AI model?

Correct answer: A — A team on Earth

Why: The second paragraph says a team on Earth sent the request.

Clue in the story: A team on Earth sent a request to an artificial intelligence, or AI, model on the satellite. The model made a poem about being in space and sent the answer back.

  3. What does Google plan to test in 2027?

Correct answer: A — Two connected satellites

Why: The last paragraph says a test of two connected satellites is planned for 2027.

Clue in the story: Google plans more tests to see how its chips work in the heat and radiation of space. The company also plans to test two connected satellites in 2027.

The open question: accept different answers

Ask learners: What did the satellite send back, and what does Google plan to test in 2027?

One possible answer: The satellite sent back a short AI-generated poem. Google plans to test two connected satellites in 2027.

This is an example, not the only correct answer. Look for a relevant idea, a reason and the learner’s own words. Learners can answer aloud or write one or two sentences.
