Youth Olympic Games Begin in Senegal

How to use these two pages

Give learners the student worksheet. It contains the story and questions, without the answers. Keep this guide for yourself. Use it to lead the activity and explain the answers afterwards.

Student worksheet

A simple 15–20-minute lesson

  1. Before reading · 2 minutes

Show the title. Ask: “What do you think this story is about?”

  2. Read and answer · 8–10 minutes

Give out the student worksheet. Learners read for the main idea, then reread to answer the 3 questions. They can compare answers with a partner.

  3. Discuss and write · 5–8 minutes

Check the answers below together. Ask learners to point to the clue in the story, then finish with the open question.

Adjust the support: Let learners use word help or Level 1 if needed. For a challenge, compare the wording in another level. This activity is not a proficiency test.

Answers to the 3 questions

The question numbers match the student worksheet. Each answer includes a reason and the clue learners can find in the story.

  1. What began in Senegal on October 31?

Correct answer: A — The Youth Olympic Games

Why: The passage identifies the event as the Youth Olympic Games, separate from the main Summer Games.

Clue in the story: The Youth Olympic Games opened in Senegal on October 31. It is the first time an Olympic sporting event has taken place in Africa. These Games are for young athletes. They are separate from the main Summer Olympic Games.

  2. What does the article say about November 13?

Correct answer: A — The Games are scheduled to end then

Why: November 13 is the planned end date, not an event already completed.

Clue in the story: The opening ceremony took place in Diamniadio, near Dakar. Around 2,650 young athletes are expected to take part. The Games are scheduled to end on November 13.

  3. Why was the event moved from 2022?

Correct answer: A — It was postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic

Why: The passage says the Games were postponed during the pandemic.

Clue in the story: The event was first planned for 2022. It was postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The open question: accept different answers

Ask learners: Where was the opening ceremony, and about how many young athletes are expected?

One possible answer: The ceremony was in Diamniadio, near Dakar. About 2,650 athletes are expected to take part.

This is an example, not the only correct answer. Look for a relevant idea, a reason and the learner’s own words. Learners can answer aloud or write one or two sentences.
