Rory McIlroy opened the Masters with one of his sharpest rounds at Augusta National in 15 years and moved into a share of the lead.

The strong start quickly renewed discussion about whether he can finally win the tournament that has kept him from completing the career Grand Slam.

McIlroy still has several rounds to play and many top golfers remain close behind him.

Even so, his first-day performance put him in an excellent position and gave supporters reason to believe this year could be different.
