Saudi Objection Pushes Pakistan to Freeze Planned Sudan Sale

A major Pakistan-Sudan defense agreement was put on hold after Saudi Arabia reportedly withdrew financing and asked for the arrangement to be terminated.

Pakistan has put a planned $1.5 billion arms deal with Sudan on hold after Saudi Arabia signaled that it wanted the agreement stopped, according to Reuters reporting published on April 20, 2026.

The proposed package reportedly involved weapons and fighter jets. Sources told Reuters that Saudi Arabia had originally been tied to financing, but later stepped back and urged Pakistan to terminate the arrangement.

That matters because Saudi Arabia is one of Pakistan's closest allies and an important source of loans and financial support. When Riyadh changes position, Islamabad usually has to weigh the broader strategic cost.

The Sudan conflict has already become a major regional and international concern, with outside powers accused of backing different sides.

Reuters also reported that another large defense deal linked to Libya could now face uncertainty as Saudi Arabia reconsiders its wider approach. That suggests the Sudan pause may be part of a bigger shift, not just a single canceled transaction.
