Iran opens Hormuz as Lebanon ceasefire begins
A ceasefire and shipping news brought some relief to markets.
Iran announced that commercial vessels can pass through the Strait of Hormuz again during the current ceasefire period. The strait is one of the world?s key shipping routes, so any change there quickly affects energy markets.
The move came on the same day that a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon began. Political leaders described the truce as a chance to reduce tension and start wider negotiations, although they also warned that the agreement was fragile.
Financial markets reacted immediately. Brent crude fell sharply, gas prices also dropped, and major stock indexes rose as traders welcomed signs that a bigger regional crisis might be avoided.
Even with that positive reaction, the situation remains uncertain. Maritime officials said they were verifying safe passage conditions, and diplomats stressed that the ceasefire must hold if the region wants a more stable and lasting outcome.
