Australia and Japan formally launched a major defense partnership on Saturday, April 18, 2026, by signing contracts that start a multibillion-dollar warship program for the Royal Australian Navy.

The agreement calls for the first three upgraded Mogami-class frigates to be built in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, with additional vessels planned for construction in Australia as the project moves forward.

Both governments presented the deal as more than a commercial sale. It is also a strategic signal that Tokyo and Canberra want stronger military coordination as security concerns rise across the Indo-Pacific.

The program shows how Japan has moved further away from its postwar export restrictions and how Australia is investing in maritime capability to protect sea lanes, monitor regional pressure points, and work more closely with trusted partners.
