Australia and Japan signed contracts on April 18, 2026 to begin a major warship project valued at about A$10 billion.

Under the plan, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will build the first three upgraded Mogami-class frigates in Japan, while later ships are expected to be built in Australia.

Officials in both countries described the agreement as an important step in strengthening military cooperation.

The project also reflects wider concern about regional security, trade routes, and the growing strategic competition shaping the Indo-Pacific.
