A Top Ukrainian Official Goes to Miami for War Talks
Ukraine sent Rustem Umerov to Miami to meet US representatives about prisoner exchanges and peace efforts because talks to end the war have stopped moving forward.
Ukraine has sent one of its most important officials to the United States for new talks about the war.
Rustem Umerov, Ukraine\'s top negotiator, arrived in Miami for meetings with US representatives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Umerov will discuss a possible prisoner exchange and ways to move peace efforts forward.
The timing is important because talks to end the war with Russia have been stalled for months. The two sides remain far apart, especially on land in eastern Ukraine.
Russia wants Ukraine to pull back from parts of the Donetsk region that Russian forces still have not fully captured. Ukraine says it will not give up territory that it still controls.
Zelenskiy said Ukraine is staying in close contact with the American side and wants those discussions to help bring what he called a dignified peace and stronger security guarantees.
The Miami trip also shows that the United States is still part of the diplomatic process, even though Washington has focused heavily in recent months on the war involving Iran.
There have not been recent direct three-way talks among Ukraine, Russia and the United States. Instead, Ukrainian and Russian officials have mostly spoken with the Americans separately.
That means the mission to Miami is not a breakthrough by itself. But it is an attempt to restart momentum at a time when the war continues and the diplomatic path remains difficult.
