Emergency declarations and evacuations were issued as authorities warned that the cyclone could trigger flooding and landslides.

Authorities across parts of New Zealand?s North Island ordered evacuations on April 11 as Cyclone Vaianu approached with forecasts of heavy rain, damaging winds, and dangerous coastal conditions.

Emergency declarations were issued in several regions, and local officials warned that some residents should expect to stay away from home for at least two days. The main concerns include storm surge, flooding, landslides, and possible disruptions to electricity and transport.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon urged people to clear drains, check on neighbors, and prepare for power outages. The warnings were taken especially seriously because the country still remembers the destruction caused by Cyclone Gabrielle.

Vaianu had not yet made full impact on Saturday, but the official message was clear: prepare before conditions worsen, not after.
